The vines of the Löwengang vineyard were already around 60 years old when our grandfather acquired the estate in 1934. Today, parts of the vineyard are 145 years old and are among the oldest vineyards in Alto Adige. Count Melchiori, the owner at the time, planted the plots in Magré with Carménère, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon around 1875.
The vines are like ancient creatures whose "wisdom" gives the wine complexity and an incredible harmony. They are a natural and cultural heritage and we see it as our task to preserve them for the future. In order to carry this unique, old DNA into the future, the planted area was extended through massal selection a few years ago. In this process, certain vines are selected and their shoots grafted onto suitable rootstocks so that they can be planted out again. This allows the DNA of old, high quality vines to be preserved.
The soil and climate have influenced the vines for decades and shaped their character. Magré is located on a talus cone made of dolomite rock. The gravel deposits have been formed over thousands of years by recurrent flooding of the Rio Favogna. The Ora, the warm wind from Lake Garda, warms Magré during the day. In the evening, cool winds from the Favona Gorge provide cooling and fresh nights.
The constantly changing climatic conditions over the past decades have shaped every single vintage of LÖWENGANG Cabernet. Each vintage tells its own story. Our task as winemakers is to respond to the changing natural conditions in order to create a new masterpiece every year.
